Jake Swallen has reportedly signed a deal ahead of his upcoming move to a MLS NEXT Pro club. Though it’s yet to be officially announced, I’m very excited Jake, who stylistically has been one of my favorite players from Wake Forest University.
Swallen is a visionary in the midfield. For those yet to watch him closely, he almost looks like a basketball point guard on the field, adding the right amount of flair and flow along with the stability required of central midfielders. Whether it’s playing an 8 or a 6 role, he’s been a joy to watch with his slick movements, close control, and tight turns. Throughout his assortment of passes, he demonstrates pro level weight and accuracy. He can also spice things up with no look passes, nutmeg passes, trivela passes, and the way he can thread a needle. The guy can pretty much play any ball you want. When his Wake Forest teammates were asked who had the best first touch on the team, it was a consensus — Jake Swallen. Despite signing a deal in NEXT Pro, he’s definitely worth keeping an eye on for future transfers, or even breaking into the first team. He looked strong this year physically after returning from an injury, so if that continues, anything is possible. I thought maybe the USL Championship would’ve been a better fit, but they’ve missed out.
The most important thing anyway is that Jake is continuing his playing career because he’s earned it and he has a lot more to offer the game. Better keep tabs on this former Wake Forest wizard.

It finally looks to be official?! Jake Swallen will be reporting to Sporting Kansas City’s NEXT Pro side within the next few weeks. For those unfamiliar with the former Wake Forest midfielder, his skills have been towards the top of NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer in my opinion. Really good signing for the Sporting Kansas City organization and a great opportunity for Swallen to work towards a spot in the first team. Well done all around!
