Rawy Rodríguez

February 22, 2003

Costa Rica

RB / LB / CB / Potential DM

Approaching free agency this coming May, Rawy Rodríguez has his sights set outside of his native country of Costa Rica, with the U.S. and Canada being top destinations for the talented young defender. He’s also seeking North American based representation in efforts to secure a new opportunity.

Ever since watching him play an important role for CS Herediano for their Supercopa de Costa Rica winning season in 2022, he has been one of my favorite prospects because of his ability to play anywhere along the back line due to his natural two-footedness combined with a list of solid defending attributes. Former teammates of Rawy Rodriguez on that successful Herediano roster include Kenneth Vargas (Heart of Midlothian), Jewison Bennette (Aris), Anthony Contreras (Pafos), and John Ruiz (AEZ Zakakiou), so certain places in Europe could also be an option since it’s clear that Costa Rica is being scouted from there. He has also played with Alejandro Bran, who is on loan with Minnesota United.

In terms of his style though, he’s definitely not shy in his defending as he plays with a great balance of aggression and patience whether its tight marking to deny the turn or win the ball in the duel, working methodically in one v. one situations to contain or find the opportunity for a tackle, or reading when to step and when to cover in team defending scenarios.

A few days ago, Stuart James shared a piece on The Athletic called ‘The two-footed enigmas: Why are so few players equally good with both feet?’ — Rawy is one of those enigmas in my opinion. It’s a special trait to be so natural with both feet. It’s apparent in his defending, but it obviously stands out even more in his possession game. The fact that he has been used interchangeably between right and left back without noticing a drop in performance is remarkable, especially for a guy who isn’t even 21 yet. His distribution is really good in a range of passing, which is why I say that he could potentially be a defensive midfielder despite not having played that role at the senior level yet.

If you’d like more information or want to get in contact with him, feel free to send me a direct message. I can e-mail the highlights from the last two Liga FPD Apertura seasons if you want to video files themselves, but you can also view them with the links below. The videos are unlisted, so only viewers with the links can access the videos. I should be able to recap his current Clausura season once it wraps up in the beginning of May as well. Rawy has expressed interest in the USL and NEXT Pro levels specifically in an effort to continue to build his career. I think he’d be a fantastic addition having already been a professional player for almost four years.
